creating multi faceted community spaces for the common good

Governance: The Spire Project and Beth Israel Synagogue Project

Questions of governance are central to inviting people into these traditional places of faith. I’ve worked with three organizations, Sydenham United Church, Beth Israel Synagogue, and the Unitarian Fellowship of Peterborough on their governance models.

In summer 2016 I worked with Sydenham United to help realize their vision of the Spire of Sydenham, a community/church not for profit collaboration that allowed the community to have a voice in the usage of this large church building. The project launched late that year and has been a successful method to allow greater community usage of the space.

The Unitarian Fellowship of Peterborough is resident in Beth Israel Synagogue. Over the years, the two groups have discovered many common missional approaches and are working on a new governance model to share the operations and management of the building in a more collaborative way. More to come on this!
